LOS REYES DE MADAGASCAR SE EXTINGUEN

Dos son las especies de lémures que he fotografiado esta vez. Lémur rufo (Varecia variegata) y Lémur de cola anillada (Lemur catta). Su restringida distribución a la isla de Madagascar los hace unos animales tan curiosos como amenazados.

El lémur de cola anillada es sin duda la especie más característica y representativa de la familia de lemúridos, pero también una de las que se encuentra en mayor declive. Según un estudio, se estima que el número de individuos de esta especie no supera la cifra de 2.500, aunque realmente habría que estudiar la variabilidad genética y no el nº de ejemplares existentes. No obstante, la dramática disminución es consecuencia de la degradación de su hábitat natural, la caza y la captura ilegal para comercio como mascotas. La explotación de minas de zafiro a cielo abierto en Madagascar provocan la mayor amenaza en la degradación del hábitat con la destrucción de los bosques.
